"The vegetarian diet was much more of a human choice rather than for the dogs," says Williams, who explains that there are hints the dogs were nutritionally deficient. An analysis of skeletons found on archaeological sites has revealed dental cavities and signs of jaw atrophy, possibly from the starchy taro and absence of the need to chew their food.
