Having trained in local businesses where her pale skin often allowed her to pass as white, she then opened her own studio catering to a predominantly black and Creole clientele. Preserving milestones such as communion and graduation, and cultural traditions such as Mardi Gras, she gave her subjects a beauty and dignity that white prejudice all too often refused to acknowledge.
