เรื่องแรกคือ ประวัติการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองจากสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์เป็นการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข ซึ่งเราได้เสนอสาระสำคัญส่วนหนึ่งในเล่มนี้ โดยเน้นให้เห็นความคลี่คลายเปลี่ยนแปลงในภาคอีสานอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม
เรื่องที่สองคือ เดือนนี้เป็นเดือนเกิดของ “สุนทรภู่” มหากวีของไทยสยาม ซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงขจรขจาย “เขมรลาวลือเลื่องถึงเมืองนคร”
นักวิชาการเชื่อกันว่าท่านเกิดเมื่อวันที่ ๒๖ มิถุนายน พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๙ ณ บริเวณด้านเหนือของพระราชวังหลัง (บริเวณสถานีรถไฟบางกอกน้อย) สันนิษฐานว่ามารดาเป็นข้าหลวงอยู่ในพระราชวังหลัง
เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๙ ในโอกาสครบรอบ ๒๐๐ ปี ชาตกาลของสุนทรภู่ องค์การยูเนสโกได้ประกาศให้สุนทรภู่ เป็นบุคคลสำคัญของโลกทางด้านวรรณกรรม นับเป็นคนที่ ๕ และเป็นสามัญชนชาวไทยคนแรกที่ได้รับเกียรตินี้
ในวงการวรรณกรรมโลก ประเทศไทยนับว่ามีบทบาทเด่นมากประเทศหนึ่ง เป็นประเทศที่ริเริ่มตั้งรางวัลระดับภูมิภาคที่สำคัญ คือรางวัลซีไรท์อันเป็นเกียรติของประเทศมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
อนาคตของอาเซียนจะเกิดเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบในอีกไม่ช้าไม่นานประชาคมอาเซียนมีสามเสาหลัก เสาหลักหนึ่งในสามที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ ประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน ซึ่งจะเป็นภาคส่วนสำคัญในการสร้างความเข้าใจระหว่างกัน สร้างความสมานฉันท์และความเอื้ออาทรระหว่างกัน
รวมถึงการส่งเสริมความเป็นตัวตนหรือที่เรียกว่า ‘อัตลักษณ์’ ของอาเซียน ผ่านกระบวนการสร้างความเข้าใจซึ่งกันและกันระหว่างมวลหมู่ประชาชนในประเทศสมาชิก
เป็นที่คาดว่า ผลลัพธ์ประการสำคัญที่จะเกิขึ้นจากการจัดตั้งประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน ก็คือ การที่ประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนจะมีกลไกและเครื่องมืออย่างครอบคลุมและมีประสิทธิภาพ ในการแก้ไขปัญหาและเสริมสร้างความร่วมมือกันในด้านสังคมและวัฒนธรรม เพื่อทำให้ประชาชนของประเทศสมาชิกมีความกินดีอยู่ดีขึ้น และประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนมีฐานะทางสังคมที่ทัดเทียมกันมากยิ่งขึ้น การที่จะบรรลุเป้าหมายข้างต้นนั้นจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ภาคประชาชนจะต้องช่วยกันสนับสนุน ผลักดัน สร้างสรรค์กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ที่สอดคล้องกับนโยบายของประชาคมอาเซียน
หนังสือ “ทางอีศาน” ก็ได้วางนโยบายทำงานช่วยสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้กับ “ประชาสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน” มาตั้งแต่ต้น แม้กำลังของเราจะยังอ่อน ไม่อาจทำกิจกรรมใหญ่โตได้ แต่เราก็พยายามเต็มกำลัง ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ร่วมมือกับมูลนิธิสโมสรมิตรภาพวัฒนธรรมสากล จัดงานสัมมนา “ร่องรอยกาลเวลา ลาว เพื่อนบ้านอาเซียนวัฒนธรรมสองฝั่งของ” ในวันที่ ๓๐ พ.ค. และวันที่ ๑ มิ.ย. ศกนี้
อย่างไรก็ตาม พันธมิตรของเรา คือ สมาคมนักกลอนแห่งประเทศไทยและมูลนิธิสโมสรมิตรภาพวัฒนธรรมสากล ก็ได้ทุ่มเทผลักดันจนเกิด “รางวัลสุนทรภู่” ขึ้น ซึ่งจะมอบรางวัลให้กับนักกวีทั้งสิบชาติอาเซียนในวันที่ ๒๖ มิถุนายนศกนี้

สรุปสั้น ๆ ว่า รางวัลซีไรท์พิจารณาจากวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์เล่มใดเล่มหนึ่ง ส่วนรางวัลสุนทรภู่จะพิจารณาจากผลงานทั้งชีวิตของนักกวี
และเพื่อให้ชาวต่างประเทศได้เข้าใจเรื่องราวของ “รางวัลสุนทรภู่” ด้วย เราจึงขอเสนอปาฐกถาภาษาอังกฤษแนะนำรางวัลสุนทรภู่ ซึ่ง ท่านสาวิตรี สุวรรณสถิตย์ ประธานคณะดำเนินงานรางวัลสุนทรภู่ แสดง ณ สถาบันศะศิน ไว้ ณ ที่นี้
Introducing The Sunthorn Phu Award

Greetings to all
I have been asked to talk about the “Sunthorn Phu Award”, to be given each year, to outstanding and living poets of the Asean countries.
The Award has been officially announced by the Thai Minister of Culture on the Sunthorn Phu Day, 26th of June this year. Official invitations have been sent to ministers of culture of all the Asean countries, to nominate one poet from one country, for the 2013 Award.
The Sunthorn Phu Award is in fact an initiative of the Thai Poet Association which received a warm support from the Ministry of Culture of Thailand. Cooperation from many agencies, including an Airline, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and some Universities, have also been pledged.
The aims of the award are (a) to promote regional recognition of outstanding Asean poets who are greatly appreciated in their respective countries, as well as (b) to promote the intra Asean exchanges and dissemination of their poetic works, through poetry reading and translations, in order to enhance mutual appreciation, and respect for the diversity of the ASEAN languages and cultures.
This is a regional award, for Asean poets only, to be given each year, starting next year. The recipients will be selected by each of the member countries, in accordance with the criteria and guidelines provided. Their names, and their representative works of at least 10 pieces, written in national language or languages, and translated into English, will be transmitted to the Ministry of culture of Thailand who will organize, in June, the awarding ceremony and the cultural exchange activities.
It is hoped that the ceremony will be graced by the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn, in spite of her heavy agenda, as she is a poet herself and a patron of art and culture.
I need not emphasize the importance of poetry, for in the Asean countries, as in all countries of the world, poetry is one of highest forms of linguistic and cultural expressions--an integral part of the people’s identities. Poetry is tradionally practiced among the people from all stratas, sung or cited, with or without musical accompaniment, and considered in some societies, as the “gift of heavens”. Long before men could read and write, poetry has been used for education, communication, and entertainment. The rhyme and rhythm of poetry, its creative use of words and sounds, its metaphors and alliterations, render poetry a special beauty and protoundity. Poetry, created from inspiration, always inspires, and transcends the boundary of time and space.
But with modern mass media and technology, the traditional role of poetry in our societies seem to have been affected. Yet in today’s world, unfulfilled aesthetic needs are felt which can certainly be fullfilled by poetry. That is why poetry is never to be a dying art, and we now see the promotion of poetry in many parts of the world, and in the U. N, where a “Poetry Day”, 21st of March, has been designated since 1999.
I should like to say a few words about Sunthorn Phu since the award will be in his name. The name “Sunthorn Phu” is taken from his title of Pra Sunthorn Woharn, but his name at birth was Phu. He was a disguished court poet, engaged and most appreciated by the King of Bangkok of the second reign, himself a great poet. But Sunthorn Phu’s lifethrough the 4 reigns, from the late 18th to late 19th century, saw many ups and downs. He was ordained for many years as a monk perhaps because of poverty, and was twice imprisoned. Yet he never stopped writing poetry, for poetry was his natural gift, his best means of emotional and intellectual expressions; and during the time when he was poor and imprisoned, poetry was the only means of his economic and spiritual sustenance.
His flowing verses, his alliterations and fresh imageries, his vivid and vastimagination, his pathos and wisdom, are still admired and remembered today. Many of his poetic romances have been made into T.V.dramas and cartoon animations; and some cantos from his work have been become lyrics for modern popular songs.
He was indeed a poet who lived for poetry. He wrote a large number of poetic works of many different kinds. Nine were in the form of Nirat, a poetic travelogue written during his long journeys and pilgrimages, in which he described, not only his actual travelling, but also his dreams and memories of the places, his life, his love or loves, and his fate. They read almost like a series of his self confessed autobiography, philosophical and humourous at times, and giving good records of the places along his routes.
He also wrote a number of poetry for the purpose of education only: the “Swasdi Raksa” for the education of the princes that he taught; the “Suphasit Son Ying” for women’s education; and “Pra Chai Suriya” for the teaching of Thai language and the promotion of literacy.
His most famous work took the form of a highly imaginative Romantic Epic---”Pra Abhai Manee” which is 30,000 -line long, and tookhim, in and out of prison, 20 years of writing in installments, in 94 books, which were sold for commercial distribution. This epic was immensely popular during his lifetime and beyond, inspiring many other art forms, such as paintings, music and dramas, and puppet shows, for the epic is full of unique and lively imagination, of natural and supernatural fantasies, and cross -culture romantic adventures, and with the great pathos that the poet rendered so movingly through his unsurpassed mastery of the simple flowing verses, called “Glon”.
Two hundred years later, this epic brought him posthumous international fame. Because it is international and universal in nature and approach, it has been studied by international scholars, and translated into foreign languages. In 1986, Sunthorn Phu was recognized by Unesco as one of the world’s great personalities whose Bicentenial celebration was associated with and participated by Unesco.
4) On behalf of the Sunthorn Phu Award Committee of the Thai ministry of culture, I express a fervent hope that the Sunthorn Phu Award will serve to strengthen the cultural bonds among the 10 Asean countries through the mutual apprecitation of each other’ s poets and poetry. We also hope that this award will help promote the Asean cultural identity and visibility,within and outside the region, and create a sense of Asean unity through the apprecitation of our linguistic and cultural diversity.
